  2. I keep a jug beside my kitchen sink that I use to save 'clean' but normally wasted water. The 'clean' water- ie when I rinse a dusty object, run water to get it hot, boil a little too much water (I measure exactly how much water I need to boil but my menfolk aren't that great at doing the same), etc- that I save in the jug, I re-use around the house. I use the saved water on my plants or for the garden birds, or to rinse the sink or to dilute my homemade citrus vinegar for cleaning, etc. I can't bear to see good water go down the drain.

  3. First of all I just wanted to say I have just found your blog and it's fantastic. I love all your tips and I am looking forward to visiting again to jot some down. Wonderful ideas.I cannot think of many tips at the moment but a couple come to mind. Egg shells are good to put around your brassicas or kale, cabbage to keep moth away as they think the eggshells are moths and will stay away. I also read that your coffee grounds are good for your garden/vegetables as well.Angela K

  5. I made up some washing powder, 2 cups of velvet soap grated, 1 cup each boric acid and washing soda crystals. I use 2 tablespoons in my twin tub washer and the 4 buckets of water used (twice weekly) go on the lemon and lime trees to keep the fruit lovely and juicy.

  7. My low impact tip is lining our indoor bin with a few sheets of old newspaper instead of using a plastic bin bag. We fold 2 sheets in half and place them one way in the base of the bin then fold another 2 sheets in half and place them the other way in the base of the bin, so that the two lots cross over. This keeps the bin fairly clean and we have no need of plastic bin liners. Just tip the whole lot into the bin and then line the base again with some more newspaper. Now and then I wash the bin out with some soapy water saved from the washing.

(We are quite careful with recycling and keeping kitchen scraps for the compost but we still need the bin for some things.)

  9. Hello sherrie, that's a fantastic tip you sent in, I'll be sure to use that one for many years. My tip is for chook owners. I have some pots with soil and plants Which I place over a patch of sand or even grass. I keep the pots moist. Then move them around every 1-2 months and let my girls find the yummy slaters and worms that have lived under the pots in the moist environment. They love to devour them...and best of all its free treats for them!

  10. Hi Sherrie,
My tip is WEE WIPES, I have been using them for 3 years plus, and my 14yo DD uses them too. We have a system, she has white face washers, and I have some made out of old flannel pjs. This works really well, we save so much toliet paper this way. I have 4 boys so they dont use that much loo paper. We also use cloth rad pads. I have used these for around 5 years and will never go back, my daughter has also taken these on, but uses disposables for school. I think my 14yo daughter is rather enlightened compared to other teenagers.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of your blog over the next couple of days.
    Rachel

  11. I have a free vegetable garden, I used unwanted old council recycling crates and 2 halves of a child's clam shell and filled them with soil from the base of the chicken coop. Soon after, I had tomatoes and rocket germinate in them and then added extra seeds from my father who gave me some out of date Yates seeds, most of which germinated. I water the crates/clam gardens with rainwater I collected via an unused council issue wheelie bin parked under a leaking gutter. The chicken manure mixed with compost provides the fertiliser!

  13. Use shower gel in your shower if you HATE cleaning as there is absolutely no soap scum build up and it saves time and money not having to buy harsh cleaning chemicals.

  14. Found out about your Blog through Kylie. I would love to be in this giveaway. I'm looking for good ideas for gardening in raised beds. I rent the house that I'm in and the garden beds are all covered in tan bark which I can't do anything about. However, at the back there is concrete and I thought that I could make some raised garden beds there .... I want to grow veges and herbs. Maybe I will find out some ideas here.

  17. My fave simple living tips in our home are good old bicarb & vinegar for cleaning, but most especially the miracle cleaner from SS. Both environmentally and budget friendly. Now my kids are growing up & one has flown the nest, I am creating a book containing the tips it has taken me 40 years to learn, so they can benefit from wisdom such as yours.

Thanks for all the effort you put into your blog, Sherrie.
