Soap Nuts For Cleaning !

Soap Nuts !
About a month ago I received  my 4 kilo box of soap nuts that I ordered ..Some thing I've been wanting to buy for a little while now, I'm excited I finally have them. So far I have used them to wash our clothes and our dishes and I'm very impressed.I love just about anything that is natural and healthy for my family and the environment...I put a kilo of each of them in 4 big 4 litre ice cream containers and have them stored in my laundry cupboard...
Photos below show all the bubbles in my kitchen sick just before starting to wash our dishes...We don't have a dishwasher in our house ...Oh of course we do, its me ...lol...I'm the dish washer...I find washing dishes very therapeutic...Below that is a photo of our washing machine half filled with water and lots of suds/bubbles from just the soap nuts ...I love it that our clothes just smell clean ...don't like our clothes smelling any other way....
They say a kilo of soap nuts will do about 400 loads washing ..not so sure about that, time will tell . But my reason for using them is more about my families health and what is best for the environment ...I have been using non toxic products for a long time in our house but these are more to my liking...Then they can be thrown into the compost or garden ...100% recyclable even more to my liking ...might even see if the worms like them...I have a few seeds so I am trying to grow them myself....They can be used for washing clothes, dishes, body, hands, hair, floors, animals, cars the list goes on ...Also I bought a few other great items that I'll share with you next post.
I'm still experimenting with them ..I haven't used them to wash my hair yet, but when I do I'll post and tell you all about it ...Who else out there uses soap nuts in their home ....

  1. Hello
I haven't tried soap nuts but I do wash my hair with Baking Soda. Have you tried that? I have been using only Bakng Soda on my hair for three years now. My hair is instantly clean, squeaky clean and soft. You may like to try that.
    Cheers

    1. Hi Linda, no I haven't tried bi-carb to wash my hair, I have read about it quite a few times on the net...I have been thinking to give it a try. I have long thick hair do you think it would be suitable for my hair...I guess the only way to find out is by giving it a try...I have rinsed my hair with citric acid, apple cider vinegar and made a rosemary hair rinse..Thanks for posting I will give it a try and report back ...

  3. I have been using them for years and they are fantastic. Washing all clean and no nasties going into my recycled water that I use on the garden and the nut goes in the compost bin after its expired its usefulness.

  4. I haven't heard of Soap Nuts before. I use an Eco Laundry Ball that claims to be natural. The washing doesn't smell of anything other than clean. I would like to try Soap Nuts instead of Washing Up Liquid if I can buy them in the UK. Take care. Marion x

  5. I have used nothing but soapnuts for several years now. The big thing I notice now is the lingering smell of chemical detergents on the clothes of others. Also I find it hard to walk down the detergent isle because the smells make my nose twitch. Oddly it was not an issue for me before I switched.

I dry my soapnuts between washes and I use a cold water wash. i know that they are meant to be used in warm water but to compensate I use a longer cycle. I found the whites need an occasional nappy san soak as they can start to look a bit grey (no optical brighteners in soap nuts). I wash dishes with them too. Brilliant on glass, especially. I put liquid soap nut into spray bottle and use the solution for cleaning. Again, excellent. Might I add that since changing to soap nut cleaners I find cleaning is quicker as the dirt does not seem to stick to surfaces as much so is easier to remove. Also tried soap nut for hair wash but couldn't get it right so switched to bi-carb. If anyone has used soap nut successfully for hair I would love to know how you did it. And, forgot to say, the dog now has a soap nut bath. No more dog shampoo for her. She looks gorgeous as ever.

    1. Hi Penny Pincher. they can be used in cold water too...I have used hot and cold, depending on weather if there is plenty of hot I will that if not I use cold...winter I always wash in cold water...I'm just like you I hate going down the cleaning isle at supermarkets...really don't have to any more...I have bought these two bottles that make the liquid soap nut all foamy they are great. I'll do a blog about it later...do you have a blog ...if so please let me know...you sound a lot like me ...
